We all love our pets and treat them like one of the family, indulging their every desire and letting them want for nothing. Although we don?t tend to lay a place for them at the table, we are in the habit of feeding our pets table scraps and human food.

Giving animals food from the table doesn?t just encourage bad behaviour, but there are also certain types of food that can be harmful to dogs and cats and some of them can even be fatal.

It?s probably obvious that giving your pet beer or wine isn?t a particularly sensible idea, but some other harmful substances may surprise you.

? Avocado ? contains persin, believed to be present in all parts of the avocado, including the plant.

? Bones (cooked) ? can splinter inside the animal causing serious harm.

? Chocolate ? contains theobromine, a diuretic and cardiac stimulant. The worst kind is dark chocolate or cooking chocolate, but even small doses can be fatal to a dog.

? Grapes (and raisins and currants) ? although the toxic ingredient has not been identified, grapes can cause kidney failure resulting in death.

? Milk ? can cause stomach upsets as many grown-up cats are lactose intolerant. If your cat does drink milk, go for one with a higher fat content as this has less lactose.

? Nuts ? these can contain a toxin as yet unidentified, but which causes lethargy, weakness and collapse, even in moderate amounts.

? Onion (and garlic) ? contains disulphides and sulphoxides which cause haemolytic anaemia and damage red blood cells.

? Salt ? in large doses this can be fatal to animals, so never add it to your pet?s food.

? Tea (and coffee) ? contains caffeine which can cause vomiting and diarrhoea but also affects the heart and can be fatal.

? Xylitol ? found in many sugar-free foods, especially sweets and chewing-gum, Xylitol is toxic for dogs.

If you?re unsure about what you can feed your pet, speak to your vet for advice. If your pet only eats cat food or dog food (neither of which should be fed to the other species), you won?t have to worry too much. However, if your pet eats anything it can get its paws on, try to keep food out of their way.
