The Importance of an Annual Skin Cancer Screening | Sarasota Skin ...

Filed in Uncategorized on January 28, 2013 with no comments

When it comes to skin cancer, you cannot afford to take any chances, especially if you live in sunny Florida. That is why it is never too soon to visit a dermatologist at Sarasota Skin and Cancer Center for an annual skin cancer screening.

Skin cancer is highly curable if detected early. Although the risk of developing the disease is greater for people over 50 years old or for those with fair skin, people of all ages and complexions can get it. When allowed to fully progress, skin cancer can lead to permanent disfigurement and even death.

Sarasota Skin can help you stay healthy by providing you with an annual skin cancer screening along with your regular dermatology visit. A screening usually involves early detection of skin cancer through the inspection of freckles, moles and other skin abnormalities.

During the screening, you must fully undress so the dermatologist can inspect your entire skin surface for any signs of cancerous growths. These growths can include rashes, lesions or a mole that is atypical. An atypical mole is one that is greater than the diameter of a pencil eraser in size, especially light or dark in tone, asymmetrical or actively bleeding. If your dermatologist discovers an atypical mole on your skin, she will perform a biopsy.

A biopsy is a relatively painless procedure. The dermatologist removes a small part of the atypical mole and inspects it for cancer. Surgical removal of the mole only takes place if the mole is determined to be cancerous.

Schedule your routine skin cancer screening with Sarasota Skin today. This small, once-a-year examination could save your life.

Business Branding Tools for 2013 | Pro Mobile DJ

By Stacy Zemon, Publisher & Chief Scribe

Your brand is a value proposition. It is what people expect to get when they book your DJ service. It is the promise of certain benefits both material and experiential, and immediate and forthcoming. It is also a promise that the benefits your clients receive will be worth the price they have paid.

A brand and branding are not the same. Branding is the strategy marketers use to build a brand. Branding sets expectations about the value proposition that is a brand.

As you review these brand-building tools, consider how you will incorporate them into your strategies to increase your DJ service?s influence and brand value in 2013.

Customization

More and more sites are making real customization a key feature of their offerings. YouTube, for example, lets you pick the color palette for your channel, and other social networking sites provide a structured template for members to create a personalized profile. LinkedIn allows you to change the order of the content and to easily personalize your profile with videos, images, documents, and presentations.

Also check out platforms like About.me, flavors.me and Zerply, which provide a one-of-a-kind home on the web.

Mobile

A great way to make your mark and increase brand awareness is to create an iPhone app. Give it away for free and market it to your target client base. Make sure it offers potential users enough benefits to get and use it, and offer an incentive to sign up for your email list.

Your app should match your brand with a matching icon with your logo and colors. The app itself should be something your target market would want to use. For instance, your app could give prospects and clients tips and incentives each day. With a little thought you can create an app that both represents your brand, encourages purchasing, as well as makes your clients and potential clients remember you every time they use the app.

Pictures

Graphic designers, architects, and artists have always used portfolios of images to showcase their work. Now, you can too.

Pinterest pinboards enable you to express your brand and your passions through images. Prezi lets you use pictures on an interactive whiteboard to convey your point of view and share thought leadership with others.

LinkedIn is using images to make your profile more visually interesting. Its inserting the logos of your mobile entertainment service into the company you work for. In addition, it now supports integrating images and presentations into your profile so you can share your thousand words? worth of image with your network contacts.

QR Codes

You can see QR codes on billboards, print ads, coffee mugs ? and, most recently, on business cards, and in all kinds of correspondence.

Business QR codes and Microsoft Tag barcodes are essential; they let you instantly share your mobile business card, and they send real-time text or email alerts whenever someone scans your code, including your company?s name, type, and location. You can even get a custom QR code printed on a T-shirt to help direct people you meet to your website.

Validation

Unless you have completely gone off the grid, you have likely noticed a new feature of Linked In: Endorsements. In fact, you have likely received endorsements or you?ve been asked to provide them.

LinkedIn knows that external feedback comes with credibility that is hard to build when the one talking about you is you. This recent change is part of a larger trend, in the form of feedback from others, that helps us validate and reinforce what we say about ourselves.

Delivering on your brand promise every day helps others understand who you are and what makes you exceptional ? and makes it easier for them to provide consistent, accurate feedback about you.

Vlogs and Video

Over the past couple of years, vLogs have become an important promotional and advertising tool for DJ services ? and, creating, posting, sharing, and promoting your videos has become extremely easy.

YouTube is a no-brainer, and Vimeo and Ustream have their virtues, as well. But, did you know that you can add video to your LinkedIn profile using SlideShare? Just click on the video symbol while editing your profile, provide the URL of your video? and presto: embedded video.

Every aspect of creating and using video has become much easier! Google+ Hangouts makes real-time group video conferences a snap. Services from videoBIO allow you to quickly create, edit, and post professional videos. They also offer a service that enables you to produce videos and embed them into email, allowing you to deliver a branded and differentiated message.

Wrap Up

I hope you have found some of these trends relevant to you, and I also hope you make plans to incorporate them into your business branding strategy for 2013!

Family left devastated after pet cat is killed by poison - This is ...

ANIMAL lover Tracey Heap has been left distraught after her two cats were poisoned with antifreeze within days of each other.

The 46-year-old was devastated when 16-month-old tabby Beauty had to be put to sleep after consuming a lethal dose of the liquid.

  1. Tracey Heap's daughter Grace Hansbury aged six holding seven month old Charlie_

And her other cat Charlie is also being treated by vets after displaying the same symptoms.

Now Staffordshire Police are investigating whether both cats could have been deliberately targeted.

Tracey, from Smallthorne, said: "Poor Beauty just kept being sick.

"I thought it was just a bug, but then one day I came home and she was making this horrendous noise and she started fitting violently.

"She had lock jaw and it didn't stop, even when we got her to the vets."

Tracey rushed the cat to the PDSA, in Stoke, where staff took the decision to put Beauty down after finding she had dangerous levels of anti-freeze in her system.

Tracey, who lives in William Ruston Road with her six-year-old daughter Grace, added: "She had a vile death. No animal should ever have to go through what she did.

"Grace saw it all and she was so upset which makes it even more distressing.

"She hasn't stopped crying since it happened. We're all devastated." Shortly after Beauty was put to sleep earlier this month, six-month-old Charlie, who is Beauty's kitten, has also had to be treated by vets for permanent kidney damage after they found that he too had been exposed to the poison.

Tracey added: "He is okay at the moment.

"He hasn't had such extreme symptoms as Beauty had, but he could take a turn for the worse at any time. That's our fear.

"He is on prescription food now and I am petrified of letting him out in case it happens again.

"But cats need to be outdoors and it is unfair on him. I don't know how long I can keep it up.

"I know there's more anti-freeze about at the moment because of the cold weather but we think they have both been deliberately targeted.

"I just want other people to be aware that this is happening."

The RSPCA is now warning pet owners to be vigilant following the poisonings.

A spokesman for the animal charity said: "Most people are unaware of the hidden dangers to pets from antifreeze poisoning. Unfortunately, many animals find the taste of antifreeze very attractive, and ingesting even the smallest amount can lead to kidney failure and death, especially in cats.

"We are deeply concerned and extremely saddened by the recent spates of antifreeze poisonings in cats across the country.

"We would like to take this opportunity to remind the public that antifreeze poisoning can cause animals pain, suffering and distress, ultimately resulting in their death."

The spokesman added: "The poisoning of a cat can constitute a criminal offence.

"Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, the maximum penalty for anyone found guilty of this offence is up to six months imprisonment and/or a fine of around ?20,000."

Staffordshire Police confirmed officers were investigating the poisonings.

A spokesman said: "We are aware of the matter and are liaising with the RSPCA."

Head Coach Tom Moore Picks Up Career Win No. 100; Men's ...

January 24, 2013

HAMDEN, Conn. ? Quinnipiac University men's basketball head coach Tom Moore picked up his 100th career win on Thursday night, as the Bobcats made it eight straight wins over Central Connecticut with an 85-78 victory at the TD Bank Sports Center. Moore became the fastest coach to win 100 in the Division I era and second fastest coach all-time in program history.

Shaq Shannon (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the difference-maker for the Bobcats ? as the junior guard poured in 18 points which included six from long-range. He was the first player to hit six threes since James Johnson accomplished the feat back in the 2010-11 season with seven against Bryant. Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) added 13 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds, while fellow front court mate Jamee Jackson (Newark, N.J.) chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds. Zaid Hearst (Bethesda, Md.) finished with 17 points making it five straight with at least 10 points. Dave Johnson (Jackson, N.J.) composed a steady offense with eight assists, four points and three rebounds.

The game didn't see more than a six-point separation through the first half and most of the second. However, trailing by one point with 13:08 showing on the clock, Quinnipiac (7-12, 3-4 NEC)?opened up its largest lead of the game with a 16-6 run behind three, threes, two from Shannon, and several easy buckets underneath. The Blue Devils would cut their deficit to three points in the waning minutes, but clutch free-throw shooting in the closing seconds put the game out of reach en route to the historic win.

The two teams matched up very evenly throughout the game; but it was the discrepancy on the boards that granted Quinnipiac the edge it needed. The Bobcats garnered a plus-20 margin on the glass, 51-31 - which also included 17 on offensive end and 15 second chance points. Both teams shot 47 percent from the floor and only combined for 14 turnovers.

Kyle Vinales, the NEC's leading scorer, led the Blue Devils with a game-high 32 points on 12-of-20 shooting. Matt Hunter added 13, while Joe Efese and Malcolm McMillan each had 10.

In a series that dates back to the 1956-57 campaign, wins are beginning to pile up for Quinnipiac. Over the last five seasons, QU has won nine out of the last 10 games and is now riding a seven-game winning streak.

Prior to tip-off, the Quinnipiac University and Central Connecticut State University Departments of Athletics and Recreation recognized three-time National Champion and former UConn men's basketball head coach Jim Calhoun for his leadership in bringing the entire state of Connecticut the highest level of recognition and success in Division I men's basketball. Quinnipiac and CCSU presented Coach Calhoun with a donation that will go directly to the Jim and Pat Calhoun Cardiology Center.

The Bobcats will wrap up the fourth week of NEC play on Saturday afternoon against Fairleigh Dickinson. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. with all the action televised live on MSG and FCS.

Fans interested in purchasing season tickets for the 2012-13 campaign can call the QU Ticket Office at 203-582-3905, visit the official website of Quinnipiac athletics, www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com or make a trip to the TD Bank Sports Center Ticket Office.

German business confidence up more than expected

BERLIN (AP) ? German business confidence has increased more than expected this month as hopes rise that Europe's largest economy will quickly put behind it a weak patch and benefit from an easing in the continent's financial turmoil, a closely watched survey showed Friday.

The Ifo institute's confidence index, a key indicator of where the German economy is headed, rose to 104.2 points in January from 102.4 in December.

The third consecutive increase lifted the index to its highest level since last June and was better than the reading of 103 points economists had predicted. Managers' view of their current situation improved somewhat and the outlook for the next half-year improved significantly.

In particular, Ifo said in a statement, "optimism is returning" in the important manufacturing sector. "The German economy made a promising start to the new year."

The German economy grew a modest 0.7 percent last year, and officials estimate it shrank by as much as 0.5 percent in the fourth quarter compared with the previous three-month period.

But the country's central bank, the Bundesbank, said earlier this week that it is already showing signs of picking up as improving export hopes combine with a healthy, stable labor market to brighten the picture.

"The contraction in the fourth quarter of 2012 seems to be short-lived," with fears of a eurozone breakup receding and prospects improving for the U.S. and China, said Carsten Brzeski, an economist at ING in Brussels.

Timo Klein, an economist at IHS Global Insight in Frankfurt, said that "the dampening impact from the troubled economies in southern Europe remains a restraining factor but will not prevent a strengthening tendency of the German economy."

The latest Ifo reading indicates that, after the fourth-quarter contraction, the economy already has rebounded in the current quarter, Klein said. First-quarter growth would prevent Germany following several other eurozone countries into recession.

Ifo's survey is based on responses from about 7,000 companies in various business sectors. Earlier this week, a separate survey of investor confidence showed a much sharper than expected rise.

P53 mutation hinders cancer treatment response

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Scientists from the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) have discovered the workings of the gene that has been hindering treatment response in cancer patients. This discovery was made after 5 years of studying the mutant form of the p53 gene, the major tumor suppressor in humans, which is generally found mutated in over 50% of all type of human cancers.

The dominant-negative (DN) effect of the mutant p53 gene in cancers was found to affect the outcome of cancer treatment modalities. DN effect is a phenomenon whereby one copy of mutant p53 that exists in cancer cells inhibits the tumor suppressor activity of the other wild-type p53 copy when they co-exist. The result is that a patient may either have poor response or earlier relapse of tumours after their treatment.

The research findings is significant in that it offers hope to improve cancer treatment outcomes by selectively inhibiting mutant p53's DN effect through several methods by generating selective and specific inhibitory molecules specific for some of the common hot-spot p53 point mutations. There are currently no drugs or compounds that can alleviate DN effects of mutant p53.

In order to understand the specific roles of mutant p53 DN properties in regulating acute treatment response and long-term tumourgenesis, a team of five researchers led by NCCS Prof Kanaga Sabapathy, the Principal Investigator in the Laboratory of Carcinogenesis and Head of the Division of Cellular & Molecular Research from NCCS, carried out experiments by generating genetically engineered knock-in mouse strains expressing varying levels of mutant p53. The results showed that DN effect is observed after acute p53 activation by a variety of chemotherapeutic drugs and irradiation, thereby affecting anti-cancer treatment. This breakthrough came after five years of intensive research.

It was found that mutant p53 have DN effects in a cell-type and dose-dependent manner, especially during acute p53 activation where p53 levels are elevated. Based on the above observations, efforts to generate specific inhibitors for the common hot spot p53 point mutations are underway. The inhibition of mutant p53 expression in cells carrying a wild-type and mutant p53 alleles can improve response to chemotherapeutic drugs.

In a further study, the researchers also questioned the possibility of the mutant p53 acquiring new functions (or Gain of Function) to drive carcinogenesis, transforming normal cells to cancerous cells. Their investigation comparing cells from genetically engineered mouse strains expressing 2 different types of p53 mutations: the R172H mutation versus the R246S mutation, which showed that Gain of Function (GOF) was found only in the former. This showed that GOF of mutated p53 is specifically dependent on mutation-type but not across all kinds of genetic mutations, highlighting diversity in properties of the different types of p53 mutations, thereby indicating that mutations found in human cancers can behave differently, and thus, need to be carefully assessed prior to treatment.

Thus, the existence of mutant p53 certainly has a negative impact on cancer treatment, whether it is through DN effect or GOF. Prof Sabapathy said that the team is now embarking on more research to determine the possibility of targeting mutant p53 without affecting wild-type p53 in human cells, paving way to clinical trials in the future to test the efficacy on cancer therapeutic response.

Deep brain stimulation improves autistic boy's symptoms

Surgically implanted electrodes could treat severe cases of the syndrome

By Laura Sanders

Web edition: January 25, 2013

Electrodes implanted deep in the brain of a boy with severe autism have enabled him to live a more normal life. The treatment reduced his destructive behavior and allowed the formerly nonverbal boy to speak a few words, scientists report online January 21 in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.

The results are the first to use brain stimulation to alleviate symptoms of autism.? Scientists caution that interpreting the results broadly is impossible without larger, systematic studies, but even so neurosurgeon Ali Rezai of the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus calls the boys? gains ?intriguing and promising.?

Researchers have become increasingly interested in deep brain stimulation, a technique in which surgically implanted electrodes act as brain pacemakers. For the last two decades, deep brain stimulation has found use treating movement disorders such as the tremors that accompany Parkinson?s disease (SN: 4/11/09, p.11). More recently, scientists have begun experimenting with the technique to treat behavioral and mental problems, including depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and severe anxiety.

The boy in the study, who was 13 at the time of his experimental surgery, suffered from severe autism symptoms: He couldn?t talk or make eye contact, woke up screaming repeatedly during the night, and habitually injured himself so badly that ?His parents restrained him almost constantly to protect him. Multiple rounds of psychiatric drugs failed to stave off his worsening symptoms.

In an effort to help him, doctors led by Volker Sturm of the University Hospital of Cologne in Germany implanted electrodes into the boy?s brain. Through trial and error, the doctors realized that stimulating a part of the amygdala, a brain structure important for emotions and memory, improved the boy?s symptoms. Stimulating other brain areas had no effect or worsened his symptoms.

After eight weeks of continuous electrical stimulation, the boy shifted on a clinical scale that measures irritability from ?severely ill? to ?moderately ill.? The boy also improved on a scale that measures autism symptoms. He began to make eye contact and was better able to control his behavior.

The boy?s parents reported even more dramatic improvements: His anxiety and self-harming behavior lessened and he slept better at night. He also began to enjoy activities such as tasting new foods, going on car rides and even playing with a piano. After six months of stimulation, the previously nonverbal boy began saying a few simple words such as ?papa? and ?mama.?

The electrodes? stimulation of the brain seemed to be behind the boy?s improvements. After 44 weeks of treatment, the battery on the device ran out of juice. During a monthlong lull in treatment, the boy?s symptoms grew more severe. Once the battery was replaced, his symptoms improved. Rechargeable batteries, which are now available, may circumvent this interruption for future patients, says Rezai.

The next step is to understand how deep brain stimulation changes the brain, particularly in people with behavioral and cognitive problems, Rezai says. That information could allow clinicians to design better therapies for these complex disorders.

Public trust in government, business leaders falls

Office workers walk in the business district of Madrid, Tuesday Jan. 15, 2013. (AP) ? Public trust in business, government and media leaders has fallen in the wake of financial and political scandals, according to a new global survey.

Heads of financial institutions did particularly poorly, mainly in richer countries that have suffered financial crises and fined banks for, among other things, manipulating markets and facilitating money-laundering.

The 2013 edition of the annual Edelman Trust Barometer found "a very significant crisis of leadership," said Richard Edelman, president and CEO of Chicago-based public relations firm Edelman. "Leaders are just not seen as leading."

A big problem is that people think their leaders "just can't get around to telling them the truth," he said.

As a result, people are increasingly looking to other sources of information for the straight story about what's going on, such as academic experts or even their peers through social media and the Internet.

Edelman said one of the glaring results of the annual survey, released ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, was that while 50 percent respondents trusted business in general to do what is right, only 18 percent trusted business leaders to tell the truth ? a 32-percentage point gap between the institution itself and the people in charge. Government didn't look much better, with 41 percent trusting government to do what's right.

The overall share of people expressing trust in basic institutions rose in the survey from the 2012 edition, to 57 percent from 51 percent, as trust bounced back from the hit it took from the European debt crisis and disputes between President Barack Obama and Republicans in Congress over the U.S. debt limit, which caused the U.S. to losing its top credit rating. Yet while institutions were recovering some lost trust, the view of the leaders of those institutions remained sour.

Edelman suggested that the result may have been influenced by prominent corporate political and financial scandals ? the investigation into alleged rigging by big banks of the London Interbank Offered Rate, an important interest rate benchmark, insider trading cases in the United States and Britain, and the scandal surrounding Chinese politician Bo Xilai, who faces trial on corruption charges.

Leaders' truthfulness score in the survey was "pretty pathetic," Edelman told the Associated Press in an interview.

The survey measured rising levels of trust for non-government organizations. "The trust is now being placed in an expert, such as an academic, or in a peer ? someone, your friends on Facebook, or whoever," he said. "The crisis of leadership is leading to people having a very different view of who they may listen to."

The online survey queried 31,000 people in 26 countries, and broke down results between the general population and a smaller sample of university-educated, higher income people dubbed members of the "informed public." It was conducted Nov. 10-15, so it preceded the many December news stories about whether Obama and Congress would agree on a budget deal to avoid the so-called 'fiscal cliff' of automatic tax increases and spending cuts on New Year's day. As it turned out, the two sides agreed on some issues and postponed others for two months.

Among the informed public group, 69 percent viewed an academic or expert as a credible spokesperson, while 61 percent looked to "a person like yourself." CEOs lagged at 43 percent among this group.

The most trusted business sector was technology, with a 77 percent credibility rate, while banks and financial services trailed with 50 percent ? just behind the news media, which polled 53 percent.

Completely self-contained label printers like the Brother P-touch PT-H100 ($34.99 direct), generally come in one of two form factors. Some, like the Editors' Choice Brother P-touch PT-D200 offer a more or less rectangular shape, and are wider than you can easily wrap your hand around. Others, like the PT-H100, are designed precisely to hold in one hand, with curved sides designed for a comfortable grip. For those who prefer the fully handheld design, the PT-H100 offers an inexpensive, easy-to-use option for printing labels without a computer.

Like the PT-D200, the PT-H100 prints the sort of laminated labels suitable for indoor or outdoor use. In fact, it prints on the same tapes as the PT-D200, at widths of 0.14 to 0.47 inches and a variety of tape types including standard laminated labels; flexible labels; labels with extra strength adhesive for uneven surfaces or harsh environments; non-laminated iron-on fabric labels; and acid-free labels, which actually means labels with acid-free adhesive so you can use then safely on, say, a photo without damaging the photo.

Despite the fact that they use the same labels and are relatively close in price, the two printers offer different sets of features beyond their shapes and keyboards. In particular, the PT-H100 has only one font, rather than eight; can store only 9 labels in memory rather than 30; and runs strictly off batteries, with no power adapter option. Rather than being essentially the same printer with a different form factor, in short, it's a significantly different printer.

The Basics
Physically, the PT-H100 is similar to the much more expensive DYMO LabelManager 420P, but smaller. It weighs roughly 1.1 pounds complete with batteries and measures 2.3 by 4.3 by 8.2 inches (HWD). However, it's much smaller than you would expect from the measurements, because the maximum width and height applies only at the top right corner, where the manual cutter sticks out. The body of the unit is only about 7.75 inches long, and only about 2.75 inches wide for about half of that length, so it's easy to hold. It widens out to about 3.75 inches on one end to make room for the 12-character LCD.

Setting up the printer consists of snapping in the tape cartridge and six AAA batteries. Brother doesn't supply batteries, however; you'll have to get them elsewhere. For my tests, I used both rechargeable NiMH batteries and alkaline batteries, just to make sure both work.

Creating and Printing Labels
Creating and printing labels is straightforward enough so you can learn everything you need to know without ever looking at the User Guide. The vast majority of the choices on the control panel menu and special purpose buttons are self-explanatory. The only feature that wasn't obvious was how to save a label to memory, and even that took me only a few false starts to get right.

To print a label, you punch in the text on the keyboard, hit the Print button, set the number of copies, hit Print again, wait for printing to finish, and then press the manual cutter. You can set text size to Large, Medium, or Small; set the text to Normal, Bold, Outline, Shadow, and Italic; add an underline or a frame with various decorations on the left and right sides; and add any of 178 symbols, including options like a palm tree, four-leaf clover, and a standard warning icon.

One minor issue is that the LCD isn't backlit. But since you're most likely to be holding the printer in one hand, while creating the label with the other, you should usually be able to find a good angle to make it readable. On the plus side, the batteries will last longer than they would with backlighting. Also helping the batteries last is that if you forget to turn the unit off, it will turn off automatically, waiting just five minutes after the most recent press of a button.

Speed and Other Issues
Print speed for label printers varies primarily with the length of the label, with the printers often rated in inches or millimeters per second. Brother rates the PT-H100 at 20mm per second, or 0.79 inches per second (ips). In my tests, it came out a touch slower, printing a 3.8-inch label with the text PCMag: Printer Test in 5.1 seconds and a 3.5-inch label with the text PCMag Print Test in 4.7 seconds, or about 0.74 ips in both cases. That's actually surprisingly fast for the price. The much more expensive 420P, for example, took 6.5 seconds for a 3.5-inch label.

Finally, note that Brother offers about 30 tape cartridges for the PT-H100. In addition to the variety of types and sizes I've already mentioned, they also come in a variety of color combinations, including black on clear, white on clear, red on white, black on white, navy blue on white, and black on yellow. Almost all of the tapes are either 26.2 feet or 16.4 feet long, with the fabric tape a bit shorter, at 9.8 feet. Prices range from $14.99 to $26.49 (list) per tape cartridge, depending on the type of tape.

If you insist on a QWERTY keyboard instead of one that's alphabetical, the Brother P-touch PT-H100 is obviously the wrong choice for you, and you should be looking at the PT-D200 instead. Similarly, if you want a printer that can either print from a computer or work as a self-contained labeling system, you'll want to look at the DYMO LabelManager 420P. But if you want the handheld form factor and don't need to print from a computer, the Brother P-touch PT-H100 can serve nicely as an inexpensive choice for easy label printing.

From bullying to relationships: Mapping our online communications

Jan. 19, 2013 ? When we typically think of kids who are the victims of school bullying, what comes to mind are isolated youth who do not fit in. A new study, however, shows that when that harassment occurs online, the victims tend to be in mainstream social groups -- and they are often friends or former friends, not strangers.

The research is part of a burgeoning field of study into the effects of social media on everyday relationships and behavior. Personality and social psychologists are finding surprising ways in which people's online environments and relationships reflect and influence their real-world ones, as presented January 19 at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) annual meeting in New Orleans.

"Researchers have known for a while that individuals give unique cues about who they are with the things they own, clothes they wear, things they say and do. However, though these cues are informative to knowing who someone truly is, they were not always so easily accessible to our entire social network," says Lindsay Graham of the University of Texas, Austin, one of the presenters. "Now with much of our lives being lived online, and the boundaries having been blurred between who sees these cues and who doesn't, it is all the more important to pay attention to the kinds of impressions we are giving off to those around us."

The emerging image of the cyber-bully

Some statistics indicate that as many as 160,000 students a year skip school just to avoid being harassed, and texting and social media are making it easier than ever to harass classmates. Victimization from schoolmates has been correlated with everything from depression and anxiety to thoughts of suicide and struggles with academics.

To study so-called "cyber-aggression" -- harassment that occurs online -- Diane Felmlee of the Pennsylvania State University and Robert Faris of the University of California, Davis, studied 788 students at a preparatory school in Long Island. They mapped the students' social network structure relative to online harassment: asking students to name their close friends, which schoolmates they have picked on or been mean to, and which schoolmates had picked on them.

What they found was that cyber-aggression occurs in the mainstream of the school and largely among friends, former friends, and former dating partners. They also found that non-heterosexual students were more likely to be the victims. Examples of the types of harassment found online were posting humiliating photos, texting vicious rumors, posting that a student is gay and making fun of him, and pretending to befriend a lonely person.

"Cyber-aggression occurred most often among relatively popular young people, rather than among those on the fringes of the school hierarchy," Felmlee says. "Those engaging in cyber-aggression also were unlikely to target strangers but often were in close relationships with their victims at one point in time, close enough to know how to harm them."

The researchers found that some of the processes that contribute to aggression in school include jockeying for status, enforcing norms of conformity, and competing for girlfriends or boyfriends.

How our online image affects our relationships

Even more innocuous online interactions can prove problematic for offline relationships, psychologists are finding. One new study shows that disclosing more about ourselves online actually lessens intimacy and satisfaction among romantic couples.

"We found that contrary to the research on offline self-disclosure, which shows that more offline disclosure leads to higher intimacy and relationship satisfaction between both romantic couples and friends," says Juwon Lee of the University of Kansas, "online self-disclosure was negatively associated with intimacy and satisfaction between couples."

In a series of studies, Lee and colleagues found that greater usage of Facebook predicted lower satisfaction in romantic relationships but not in friendships. In one study, the researchers created two different mock Facebook walls: one that had a high degree of self-disclosure (e.g., many personal pictures and personal status updates such as "Just had a fight with Mom" or "Pretty interesting training at work today") and one that had a low degree of self-disclosure (e.g., neutral status updates such as "Nice weather today"). They asked the participants to imagine that one of the walls was their partner's and then measured their relationship intimacy and satisfaction. Those who had the walls with high levels of self-disclosure reported less intimacy and satisfaction with their relationships compared to those with the more minimal walls.

"Disclosing a high degree of personal information online, regardless of whether or not the information is related to your partner or relationship, will likely negatively affect your romantic relationship," Lee says.

How our online image matches us offline

Researchers are also investigating how closely the information we disclose online mirrors who we are offline. In two new sets of studies, psychologists looked to World of Warcraft players and to profiles of people who frequent cafes and bars.

"With more and more of our lives being lived both in the physical and virtual worlds, it's important to understand the kinds of impressions we give off to others through the traces we leave behind in our environments," says Graham of the University of Texas, Austin, co-author of the studies with Sam Gosling. "Whether we're creating a screen name or avatar for ourselves, or broadcasting that the bar or coffee shop down the street is one of our frequent hangouts, we are inevitably telling those around us something about who we are as individuals."

In the study about World of Warcraft players, the researchers found that although people can make consistent judgments about a player's personality, those impressions do not match how the players view themselves. In the second set of studies, they examined 50 randomly selected cafes and bars in the Austin area and looked at the profile pictures of people who frequent those establishment using the social networking site Foursquare.com. Just by looking at the profile photos of the frequent patrons for each location, observers were able to assess the personality the typical patron (e.g., extraverted, likeable, narcissistic), the activities likely to occur at the establishment (e.g., drinking, surfing the web, flirting), and the atmosphere or "vibe" of the location itself (e.g., sophisticated, clean, kitsch-y).

For comparison, the researchers sent a second set of observers to the same locations to make the same assessments in person. "Interestingly, we found that when we compared the impressions formed from just the profiles with those formed from the establishments themselves, there was quite a bit of overlap," Graham says. "Impressions were consistent no matter what type of stimuli an observer sees -- suggesting there is some cohesion in the types of people who go to certain places and the places themselves."

How communication channels shape what we say

Aside from creating images of ourselves online, people increasingly use social media -- including Twitter, Facebook, and blogs -- to communicate a variety information, including about consumer products. Exactly which modes of communication we choose, online versus offline, affects how we talk and what we talk about, a new study finds.

Jonah Berger of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and colleagues analyzed more than 21,000 everyday conversations on- and offline. They found that online posts and texts provide people the opportunity to take pauses in conversations, and thus more carefully craft what they say. As a result, those conversations tend to be more interesting than conversations face-to-face or over the phone.

The researchers measured interest by "coding" the conversations, which came from the Keller Fay Group, a research marketing firm that tracks which brands and products consumers talk about. Brands such Christian Dior and products such as the Audi A6 scored as highly interesting, while brands like Ross and products like insurance scored as not at all interesting.

"These findings shed light on how communication channels shape interpersonal communication and the psychological drivers of word-of-mouth more broadly," says Berger, who is author of the upcoming book Contagious: Why Things Catch On.. "They underscore the old maxim of thinking twice before you open your mouth."

AARP Endorses Indiana's Caregiver Bill - Retirement Homes

Indianapolis State Legislature Paves Way for Caregivers

AARP Indiana has gone to bat for caregivers by supporting a state income tax credit for people who care for aging relatives in their homes. The AARP state director told Public News Service that 1.3 million residents of Indiana provide $9.4 billion of unpaid care in their homes. Caregivers with income under?$110,000 per year will be eligible for a $5,000 state income tax credit.

The legislation will assist Hoosiers without access to a 401(k) or retirement plan and is touted for being consistent with taxpayers wishes to be effective, yet inexpensive.

Many studies have shown that caregivers across America suffer many setbacks to help out loved ones. The MetLife Mature Market Institute? published a comprehensive research paper on caregivers stating: ?The total estimated aggregate lost wages, pension, and Social Security benefits of these caregivers of
parents is nearly $3 trillion.?

The report stated that there are other important problems: ?For all working caregivers, it is not unusual also to report missed opportunities for promotions, business travel, relocation, and education as workplace effects of providing care. Overall, both current wages and retirement income can suffer as a result.?

People who age in place are potential candidates for Assisted Living and Continuing Care residences.

Nicholas Hoult Suits Up & Looks Fly At The Rome Premiere Of ?Warm Bodies?

Anybody else excited that Nicholas Hoult is will be hitting the big screen again soon?

The sexy British star was spotted looking dapper on the red carpet at the Rome premiere of his new film, Warm Bodies. It?s amazing seeing how Nicholas has grown up to be so hot. Remember when he was the little kid from About A Boy?

Nicholas may have recently split up with Jennifer Lawrence, but he didn?t seem to let that bother him. Maybe he was too focused on the fact that he had to eat fake human brain in Warm Bodies. What exactly was said fake brain made of?

Well, as Nicholas joked, ?I think it was made of the brains of ex-American Idol?contestants, They just lined up and shipped ?em out for us. Which was really nice.? Sexy, and he has a sense of humor. And look at that smile!

Launch the gallery to check out all the photos of Nicholas at the Rome premiere! Excited for Warm Bodies to hit theaters? I?m not sure how I feel about making zombies sexy. Anyone care to explain the appeal? Other than Nicholas? pretty face, of course.

Skin-Cancer Spotting Apps Miss Their Marks

Click here to listen to this podcast

New smart phone apps now let you snap a picture and upload it for a skin cancer check. Sure sounds a lot easier than trekking into the dermatologist, right? But a new review of these apps finds that most of them are not very accurate. Dermatologists uploaded 188 images of skin lesions to four different app-based services. The apps, which are unregulated, mostly use algorithms to judge?often in less than a minute?whether the spot is benign or something to get checked out. Three of the four apps failed to catch at least one-in-three known cases of melanoma. The apps also falsely identified plenty of benign growths as possibly cancerous. The findings are in the journal JAMA Dermatology. [Joel Wolf et al., Diagnostic Inaccuracy of Smartphone Applications for Melanoma Detection] The fourth app, which did okay, actually used board-certified dermatologists to review images. It was the most expensive at five bucks per assessment and took 24 hours. So next time you're worried about a mole, don?t use an app, get an ap?pointment?with a dermatologist. ?Katherine Harmon [The above text is a transcript of this podcast.]

NYC museum launches Enterprise exhibit

A floating Manhattan museum unveiled a temporary new exhibition devoted to the space shuttle Enterprise Thursday while the prototype orbiter ? NASA's first shuttle ? is being restored after a devastating storm.

Called " Space Shuttle Enterprise: A Pioneer," the exhibition debuted inside the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in response to the closure of the Enterprise pavilion after Hurricane Sandy, displays some never-before-seen artifacts from the space shuttle's history. The shuttle Enterprise itself is parked on the flight deck of the Intrepid, which is a retired World War II aircraft carrier.

"The exhibition is really looking at Enterprise, celebrating its history," Jessica Williams, curator of history at the museum said. "We'll be getting a little bit of background about the science of the space shuttle and the origin of the space shuttle program, but focusing on Enterprise specifically, what Enterprise accomplished. Also, we're taking a peek at some of the people involved with Enterprise and the pop culture connections as well."

The space shuttle Enterprise was NASA's first space shuttle, but never flew in space. The prototype orbiter was used for vital approach and landing tests that paved the way for the first orbital shuttle flight in 1981. The Enterprise was named after the fictional " Star Trek " starship of the same name in 1976 after a massive letter-writing campaign to the White House.

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

    1. Europeans to build key piece of NASA spaceship

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: NASA and the European Space Agency have signed an agreement calling for the Europeans to provide the service module for the Orion space capsule, the U.S. space agency's crew vehicle for exploration beyond Earth orbit.

    2. Solar 'blob' powers up the northern lights
    3. Tragic Columbia trek launched 10 years ago
    4. It looks like Einstein's right again!

One case in the new Intrepid exhibition not only honors Enterprise, but also pays homage to the Intrepid. Former astronaut Richard Truly served as a pilot on the Intrepid during the early part of his career, but eventually joined NASA to do flight tests for the space shuttle. Both his helmet and flight jacket are featured prominently at the entrance to the exhibit. [ See Photos of the Shuttle Enterprise Exhibit ]

Although they aren't the originals that flew aboard the Enterprise, NASA donated some cockpit instruments that were in use during the time the shuttle Enterprise flew in 1977. Because visitors to the Intrepid cannot see the interior of the space shuttle, the instruments and accompanying photo of Enterprise's control panels are a good alternative, Williams added.

"During the time the pavilion was closed, we were fully aware that the public was still eager to hear stories and see material object related to the shuttle," Elaine Charnov, vice president of exhibits told Space.com, "so obviously this is just another opportunity to provide the public with additional stories and content."

The space shuttle arrived in New York and was delivered by barge to the Intrepid in July 2012.

Enterprise was damaged during Hurricane Sandy when the museum lost back-up electricity because of high winds. The inflatable pavilion housing the space shuttle deflated, detaching part of the shuttle's vertical stabilizer. The pavilion has been closed ever since, but it should be up and running again sometime in the spring, a museum spokesperson said.

While the Intrepid has no set plans to take down the exhibit anytime in the near future, the temporary exhibit was created on an incredibly accelerated time scale.

"This was probably about one-eighth of the design, development, building process that we normally would have," said Christopher Malanson, the assistant vice president of exhibits at the Intrepid.

Exhibition curators are still on the lookout for new materials to add to the Enterprise display. They hope any members of the public with materials related to the Enterprise will contact the museum if they wish to donate.

The museum is also hoping the public will get involved in another way. A flat screen TV outside of the exhibition cycles through photos of Enterprise's arrival in New York, and the curators hope that everyone will send photos to the museum once an email address to receive crowd-sourced submissions is set up next week. Anything related to the Enterprise is welcome, Williams said.

The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum is located at Pier 86 (46th Street and 12th Avenue) in Manhattan. Any inquiries about donations or artifacts should be sent to: collections@intrepidmuseum.org.

UPDATE 1-Football star Te'o's girlfriend and her death a hoax, U.S. college says

(Adds details from Notre Dame athletic director)

Jan 16 (Reuters) - Notre Dame football star Manti Te'o, whose on-field excellence after his grandmother and online girlfriend purportedly died made him a hero in the sports media, was the victim of a hoax because the girl never existed, the university said on Wednesday.

The girlfriend, who called herself Lennay Kekua and claimed to be a Stanford graduate, was merely an online persona who "ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia," university spokesman Dennis Brown said in a statement.

Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick said the university learned of the hoax from Te'o on Dec. 26. He answered questions forthrightly and private investigators uncovered several things that pointed to Te'o being a victim in the case.

"This was a very elaborate, very sophisticated hoax perpetrated for reasons we can't fully understand but had a certain cruelty at its core, based on the exchanges that we were able to see between some of the people who perpetrated it," Swarbrick told a news conference.

Notre Dame's statements came after the website Deadspin.com published a long expose under the headline "Blarney," alleging that Kekua was a hoax dreamed up by a friend of Te'o's.

"Manti Te'o did lose his grandmother this past fall. Annette Santiago died on Sept. 11, 2012, at the age of 72, according to Social Security Administration records in Nexis," the website said.

"But there is no SSA record there of the death of Lennay Marie Kekua, that day or any other. Her passing, recounted so many times in the national media, produces no obituary or funeral announcement in Nexis, and no mention in the Stanford student newspaper."

Deadspin said photographs identified as Kekua and shown in online tributes and on TV news reports belonged to a living 22-year-old California woman of a different name who is not a Stanford graduate, has never had leukemia and has not met Te'o.

Te'o, an All-American linebacker and finalist for the Heisman Trophy, college football's top individual honor, acknowledged in a statement carried by ESPN.com and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, that he had never met Kekua in person.

But he said Wednesday he had developed an emotional relationship with her and "maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone," according to the statement.

"To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating," Te'o said.

On Sept. 15, Notre Dame upset Michigan State 20-3 in a lopsided game where Te'o racked up 12 tackles - a considerable number.

It was a remarkable performance by the senior. But Te'o told his coach his grandmother and girlfriend had died just a few days before the game. The coach told reporters and Te'o's excellence became even more celebrated by the media.

Notre Dame continued to win and was preparing to meet Alabama in the national collegiate championship game on Jan. 7 when Te'o told the university that he might be a hoax victim.

"The thing I am most sad about is that the single most trusting human being I have ever met will never be able to trust in the same way again in his life," Swarbrick said of Te'o. "That is an incredible tragedy."

The private investigators turned their final report over to the university on Jan. 4. That report will not be made public, Swarbrick said.
