Business Security Systems 101: Why Now Is the Right Time to ...

It can be argued that the worst thing to happen to your business is a breach in security. A small business needs to stay safe from actual break-ins, employee fraud or theft, and Internet hackers. If confidential information is stolen through one of these security mishaps, your business could spend a huge amount of time trying to recover (if recovery is even possible). This makes all different types of small business security an extremely important factor in the success of a company.

The easiest way to protect a company is through small business security systems. There are different types of security systems when it comes to Internet security and backing up files, but an IT professional is usually very equipped with the necessary steps that need to be taken to avoid this type of security break. On the other end of the spectrum, companies are often unprepared when it comes to actual unauthorized activity in the office.

Business security systems come in all different shapes and sizes. Some are more designed for larger companies and maximum security, while others work as a smaller and easier security system for companies in a safe area or with a small number of employees. There are really three different types of surveillance systems:

• Video ? This is the most common type of security system for a company that wants to monitor employee activity. In general, businesses will point the camera toward cash registers or safes and then hook up the video in a secure office. This allows a boss to watch over employees at all times. This is most popular if you run a company that operates overnight.
• Access Control ? These systems work very much like most home security systems. This requires employees to punch in a code on a keypad or swipe a card in order to get into the building. This isn?t quite as fancy as a video surveillance system, but it works great if you want to keep unauthorized people out of the building. These systems generally don?t have a video, but an alarm will sound when someone breaks in the building or office without knowing the code or having a keycard. Many access control systems will even wait 30 seconds and then alert authorities.
• Wireless ? Wireless systems are usually used by companies expecting to move offices. There are no wires to deal with and the systems are mobile. However, it is the responsibility of the business owner to change batteries and call the police if there is any suspicious activity.

As a small business owner, you always want to make sure that you consider whether or not a security system has room to grow. Even if you think you?re pretty set in your office space, it?s a good idea to purchase a system that can cater to more than simply in-office use or out-of-office use. Business security systems can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000, so talking with others who have used the business security system you?re interested in purchasing is well worth your time.
